Hollywood Intermediate is LA's premiere Digital Intermediate boutique facility. With its top-notch services, unique décor and convenient location, Hollywood Intermediate seamlessly integrates superior quality into performance, atmosphere, client and community.
Hollywood Intermediate accommodates a full range of budgets, ranging from 16mm and 35mm productions that historically would finish photochemically and require very aggressive digital intermediate pricing, to higher budgeted projects with leading DPs, directors and producers. Our equipment is leading-edge and includes Filmlight’s Northlight scanner and Baselight color corrector and conform systems, along with an Imagica HSR film recorder. Our D.I. grading theatres are equipped with 2K Barco Projectors and are calibrated to match our film output.
Our talent is what really sets us apart. It includes a pioneer in the realm of Digital Intermediates. Julius Friede, formerly of Cinesite and colorist for “O Brother, Where Art Thou”, is one of the most experienced D.I. colorists in the world. He has completed over 50 DIs, at Cinesite, Éclair Lab in Paris, and Hollywood Intermediate. Our VP of Operations, organized and managed Cinesite’s team of artists and technicians which produced the first digital intermediates in the United States.
With state of the art tools, our premier creative and technical team can transform your vision to the big screen and beyond. We recommend visiting our facilities and meeting with our highly trained staff.

AFFORDABLE HIGH RESOLUTION FILM SCANNING & FILM RECORDING
Hollywood Intermediate offers a la carte DI services that feature High Resolution Scanning and Film Recording in addition to full Digital Intermediate service packages.
Scanning is done with the NORTHLIGHT FILM SCANNER, a high-quality pin registered digital film mastering scanner transferring 16mm and 35mm motion picture film into resolutions as high as 6k x 4.5k at true 16 bit color depth.
Imagery is recorded to film using the recently acquired IMAGICA HSR FILM RECORDER. The HSR also offers good densities without flare, excellent color separation and excellent uniformity across the frame with a significant increase in sharpness and speed allowing us to record a complete feature in less than 24 hours on one machine.

2k High Definition Preview Masters
Hollywood intermediate offers High Definition preview masters as part of its normal digital intermediate service packages. The challenge for completing the final editorial decisions on a motion picture are balanced between the ability to display the highest resolution picture for a test audience, and the costs and time in having to re-master your film based on a test audience response.
Typically, in current post-production workflow, HD dailies masters are edited into high quality preview masters including color timing, dirt removal, opticals and visual effects. Unfortunately, none of these processes translate to the theatrical release of the film as they must all be duplicated or repeated in either a higher resolution digital format such as 2k or 4k, or in the photo chemical process.
Hollywood Intermediate, gives Motion Picture Producers, the ability to scan their selected original camera negative at 2k or 4k film resolution, conform a high resolution digital master for theatrical and broadcast release including dirt removal, opticals and visual effects, and output a High Definition preview master to be used for preview screenings and focus groups that can be deployed in any theater location worldwide. Editorial change lists for new audience screening can be quickly output for subsequent new test audience screenings.
High Definition Masters can be provided as either a High Definition D5 master, or in DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) compliant XYZ color space. Once the preview screening and focus group process is complete, Hollywood Intermediate quickly and efficiently applies any final editorial changes to the film including additions and deletions, and outputs the final theatrical film master as well as all High Definition and Standard Definition Broadcast Masters plus a Digital Cinema Master if necessary. Hollywood Intermediate’s process can also eliminate the costs associated with the transfer of film dailies to High Definition for electronic editing.
Most recently, Hollywood Intermediate has used this process on the motion picture dramas, "Journey to the End of the Night," starring Brendan Fraser and Scott Glenn, "The Sensation of Sight" starring Academy Award Best Actor Nominee, David Strathairn, and "My Mom's New Boyfriend" starring Antonio Banderas and Meg Ryan.

Custom Film Effects and Hollywood Intermediate
Bring Visual Effects, Digital Intermediate into integrated Workflow
Burbank, California - Visual effects shop Custom Film Effects and digital intermediate house Hollywood Intermediate have joined forces to form the Main Street Media Group, bringing Visual Effects, Title Design, Digital Intermediate, and Scanning/Recording into one pipeline.
"This new relationship strengthens each company and allows them to take on larger, more complicated projects," said Mark Dornfeld, President of Custom Film Effects. With post production schedules continually shortening, making the best use of a project's time in the Digital Intermediate suite is essential. Dornfeld adds, "This is where the Main Street Media Group's approach benefits producers most."
"What we're seeing today is that virtually all films have some form of visual effects work," noted David Waters, President and CEO of Hollywood Intermediate. "Whether it's cleanup or last minute studio notes and changes, these unforeseen shots often cause major delivery panics at the end of a post schedule. We're here to change this."
Though the tools available in today's Digital Intermediate suites are numerous, when it comes to complex compositing, painting, or rotoscoping, this often time-consuming work is best done on specialized workstations. In the interest of speed, however, producers will often attempt to complete work in the DI suite or in an adjacent Smoke or Inferno bay. If this involves just a few shots, this might be acceptable. However, if the number of shots or their complexity is beyond a minimal level, a project can easily burn through its alloted time, running the risk of short-changing the color correction process.
"At the Main Street Media Group, producers have at their disposal a team of animators, compositors, and title designers working in parallel with a top-notch scanning, recording, and color correction team. This gives each project the maximum attention and quality to the effects work without creatig a bottlenect in the DI room," says Christopher Cundey, Director of Marketing for Custom Film Effects.
Both Waters and Dornfeld are extremely excited at what the new alliance will bring to the film finishing process.
"This is about giving our clients the best tools for the job."
Hollywood Intermediate also offers color grading on a state-of-the-art Grading Bay at the prestigious audio facility, Wildfire Studios (formerly Wilshire Stages), affording filmmakers the ability to perform sound mixing and DI grading in the same facility at the same time.
